Neighborhood Matters: Stephen Gray: Urban Design and the Color-Line

Stephen Gray, professor at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, will join us to discuss Race and Space in Boston Archives, part of a multi-city installation on “Urban Intermedia: City, Archive, Narrative.” This project invites research connections across disciplinary boundaries by using a range of technologies to bring physical and digital media—archival documents, digital data sets, photography, cartography, architectural drawings, graphics, text, animation, film, and video—into dialogue with each other. Gray will discuss his graduate seminar, Urban Design and the Color-Line, that "acknowledges the role that race and class have played (and will continue to play) in the design and production of urban infrastructure" and engages "the problematic either-social-impact-or-design binary."

Race and Space in Boston Archives gathers archival materials from Boston-based collections—including Northeastern University Library’s Archives and Special Collections—related to race, space, and power in the city’s development.

Lunch will be served.
