DH Open Office Hours - Doing Public History and Evaluating Public History

There are public historians who do public history and those who evaluate it. Lauren Bergnes Sell and Megan Barney, graduate students in Public History, will present on their respective DH Certificate projects which explore each ends of this spectrum.  Lauren’s project, DEV3D: 3D Modeling for Historic Sites, uses 18th Century tombs at Boston’s King’s Chapel as a case study to understand how digitization of spaces can allow greater accessibility to a larger audience. Megan’s project, History Needs New Heroes, seeks to reveal who gets presented, or forgotten, as a “hero” in high school American history textbooks through close reading and content analysis of recently published textbooks. Attendees will learn about the goals and tools of each project and their usefulness in the public history field.

DH Open Office Hours are a great way for beginning and experienced researchers to share knowledge about how to use different tools, or to turn an idea into a solid project. We’ll also share current and completed projects, as well as our experiences with many different facets of the DH world. There will also be informal talk sessions with visiting digital scholars. This is a great opportunity to meet other students and faculty who are interested in DH and see what they’re up to. Feel free to bring your lunch!

DH Open Office Hours are held every Wednesday from 12:00 - 1:00 PM in the Digital Scholarship Commons Media Lounge, located on the second floor of Snell Library (take a right out of the stairwell, head through the glass double doors, and take an immediate left toward the orange couches).
