Design for Diversity Closing Forum Day 2: Writing Sprint

Design for Diversity Closing Forum Day 2: Writing Sprint

This Writing Sprint is the second day of the Design for Diversity Closing Forum, August 23-24, at Raytheon Amphitheatre in the Egan Center at Northeastern University. If you would like to attend the first day, please register separately here: https://northeastern.libcal.com/event/4243161

While the schedule is being finalized, we anticipate the Writing Sprint will be approximately 9am to 5pm.

Are you interested in education and advocacy for more inclusive information systems in libraries, archives, and museums? The Design for Diversity project, supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, focuses on the ways in which information systems embody and reinforce cultural norms, asking how we can design systems that account for diverse cultural materials and ways of knowing. As part of this project we are building a collaborative pedagogical toolkit to encourage inclusive and ethical practices in information sciences and system design. It will include an expanding set of materials including sample assignments, curricular modules, suggested readings, and case studies, and the Digital Library Federation will eventually host the Toolkit as a growing community-driven resource.

We invite you to join us for a daylong writing workshop at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts where you will create and refine material for the Design for Diversity Toolkit, providing educational materials that can be used in the classroom, workplace, or other communities. Writing Sprint participants will spend most of the day creating and refining case studies and study paths. Case studies are short (about 1000 words/4 pages), concrete reflections on real-world challenges and examples, providing grounded examples for students, practitioners, and professionals to think with, in relation to more theoretical and speculative readings. Study paths are a learning activity (or several) that combine case studies, readings, and other resources into a small but substantive learning module.

The final deadline for applicants for the Writing Sprint was July 15, 2018, and we will notify participants by July 25, 2018. We still have a few spots left, so please continue to apply and we will notify the second cohort of accepted participants shortly after the first.

We have a small pool of funding to assist with travel for Writing Sprint participants, so if you're coming from a distance please describe your travel costs and we will do our best to help.
